How to get the International Driving Permit in Tokyo

International Driving Permit (IDP) is required if you want to drive a vehicle in most European countries. An IDP is basically an official, multi-language translation of driving license. It’s valid for one year. Also, IDP is valid in nearly 140 countries [1].

There are several places where you can get the IDP in Tokyo. Such as Driver’s License Center, Driver’s License Renewal Center and designated police station [2].

Only Driver License Center will open on Sunday from 8:30 to 16:30.

You have to go there with the following documents.
>Japan Driver License
>ID Photo x1 (50mmx40mm)
>Passport

If you forget to bring your ID Photo, you can find some ID photo booths in Driver License Center. Staff will give you the IDP application form. After you pay JPY 2350, you can get IDP. It’s very easy. Usually, you can finish it within 30 min. But you can’t entrust someone to do this. Hope in the future, we can apply online or by post.
